WE GO BLUE FOR TYPE 1 DIABETES

JDRF’s Mission is to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, treat and prevent type 1 diabetes and its complications.

T1D

Type 1 diabetes is a chronic autoimmune condition that can develop at any age. There is nothing anyone can do to prevent T1D, and right now there is no known cure.

When someone develops type 1 diabetes, the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own cells instead of defending against foreign invaders. In this case, the immune system attacks the beta cells in the pancreas, which produce insulin. Insulin is a hormone that converts glucose from food into energy for the body. Without enough insulin, glucose accumulates in the bloodstream, leading to diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a dangerous condition.

Type 1 diabetes is a lifelong condition, and there can be a risk of complications if blood glucose levels (BGLs) are not kept within the optimal range using various management strategies.

SOME INTERESTING STATS…

  • 130,000 Australians living with T1D in Australia
  • 8 new diagnoses per day
  • Estimated 25,000 people in early stages of T1D, not yet diagnosed
  • T1D prevalence grew 3X faster than the population in 2022
  • 40% of people who have T1D have more than one T1D-related complication

JDRF’S FOCUS AREAS

Research

JDRF has been part of every advancement in type 1 diabetes (T1D) care in the last 50 years. As the world’s largest funder of T1D research, we collaborate, connect and co-ordinate the world’s greatest minds to deliver tangible improvements for the T1D community.

Advocacy

Through our tireless representation of the challenges facing the T1D community, we have delivered real change in partnership with our advocates. We have changed how Governments view type 1 diabetes and delivered nearly $500m in new investment in T1D in 10 years.

Community

A community-driven organisation founded to support Australians living with type 1 diabetes, the T1D community is our focus. From first diagnosis through to living with T1D as an adult, our resources, staff, and community are with you each step of the way.

Fundraising – Adjusted to suit Bash

Changing the world of T1D is challenging and expensive. People from a range of backgrounds have provided JDRF significant support to JDRF’s Mission over the last 50 years in Australia.

The 2nd Big Blue Day at the Big Red Bash is a standout highlight of this level of good old-fashioned Aussie support! In 2023, 5467 bashers broke the world record for “the largest human image of a country”, dressing head to toe in Blue. The Bashers contribution and support in 2023 topped $120,000 for JDRF type 1 diabetes research.

RUFUS

Rufus, the Bear with Diabetes, has provided comfort and companionship to newly diagnosed children with type 1 diabetes (T1D) for over 25 years.

Rufus is a cuddly friend given to children when they’re diagnosed with T1D. He comes in JDRF’s KIDSAC, which is a backpack filled with helpful information and resources for the whole family.

Rufus shows children they’re not alone while learning to live with T1D, helping families be brave as they learn a world of finger pricks and injections, and makes learning about T1D fun!

Rufus comes with his very own app, offering an easy way for children to learn and play with T1D. By helping Rufus manage his diabetes, children gain hands-on practice with counting carbs, monitoring BGLs, and dosing with insulin using virtual diabetes care tools.

Get ready for an adventure of a lifetime at this year’s Big Red Bash!
